6 Months with the Huawei P40 Pro

I’ve mentioned this countless times on my Instagram, but I really want to emphasize again here on my blog that the camera on Huawei’s P40 Pro is such a phenomenal work of art ! I have happily replaced using my DSLR camera with the P40 Pro for almost all my photoshoot needs ! It is indeed a mobile camera with specs and features that any competitor will find hard to match, and I’ll show you why below :

(For a general review of the P40 Pro, please see my previous review here)

For anyone who is not so camera or tech savvy, just by looking at the back of the P40 Pro - with its silver frost no fingerprints finish - you should immediately trust that Huawei has invested quite a lot into making a next level mobile camera for this phone - it has FOUR Leica lenses of different focal lengths. They consist of a 50 MP wide-angle lens, a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a tele-camera that uses folded optics to achieve a 5x optical zoom factor, and a ToF 3D depth-sensing camera.

The front facing camera is a dual lens with a 32MP 1/2.74-inch sensor with 0.8µm pixels and a 26mm-equivalent f/2.2-aperture autofocus lens.

Voted “Best Photo Smartphone” in 2020 by TIPA, The images created by Huawei’s P40 Pro are crisp and rich in colour. The camera does exceptionally well in not-so-photo-friendly conditions : It takes extremely beautiful photos under harsh light and it also has an impressive night photography mode. I tried shooting in almost complete darkness, the picture showed things my bare eyes couldn’t even see, albeit obviously quite grainy. But that was an extreme case. The P40 Pro delivers very amazing images in dimly lit rooms. This is extremely helpful when I use it to shoot content for romantic candle lit restaurants. This is because the P40 Pro uses pixel binning technology to increase the dynamic range and low-light capabilities.

Another of my favorite features of the camera is its ultra-wide ability. Huawei implements a large and high-resolution image sensor in its ultra-wide camera. Although the newest Iphone also offers a comparable width range, it cannot compare when it comes to the photo quality when shooting with the ultra-wide camera. Huawei’s P40 Pro’s wide angle camera not only performs better in good photo conditions, it also results in much better low-light performance. In comparison, Huawei’s photos come out much cleaner and less grainier than its competitors in the same mode.

It is also worthy to note that the P40 Pro also produces high quality videos with very good stabilization even when shooting in the 4k mode ! I normally shoot my YouTube content with the Canon G7X - one of the most popular camera choices for most vloggers out there. I normally attach my Canon G7X on a mini stabilizer/tripod, and it’s undeniably a very heavy combo to carry around. A few weeks ago, my Canon ran out of battery and I switched to shoot the rest of my content with the P40 Pro. I was SUPER PLEASANTLY SURPRISED to find out that the P40 Pro delivers extremely good quality videos, with better stabilization than my Canon on a stabilizer ! And of course, it’s much much much easier to shoot with and much much much lighter to carry !

Lastly, for those who are wondering about how easy it is to obtain different apps on the Huawei’s P40 Pro, I’ve written a full experience here.

But just to give you an idea, it is extremely easy to obtain almost everything you need via these three methods :

Phone Clone

This is how I got all my apps and data onto my new Huawei P40 Pro when I was setting it up for the first time. During the setup process, I was asked if I wish to transfer all my apps, data, photo/videos, and files from my old phone. I was able to choose exactly what I wanted to transfer over and what I did not. In a blink of an eye, I got everything I needed onto my new P40 Pro and didn’t need to perform any more steps.

However, if you don’t have an old phone to work with, or if you wish to download new apps. You can find them easily on either Huawei’s AppGallery or via Petal Search.

Huawei AppGallery

Huawei’s AppGallery is the official app store for Huawei smartphones and tablets. It has over 420 million active users and over 450k apps available. In fact, Huawei’s AppGallery is the third largest app marketplace in the world ! The installation process is no different from that of Google Play.

Petal Search

The Petal Search app is built in your P40 Pro. It’s basically a powerful search engine for all Android apps. For your convenience, you can also find news, weather, and other information there. Users can simply use the Petal Search widget directly from the home screen to search for anything you need ! Petal Search should fill in the gap on anything you cannot find on Huawei’s AppGallery and provides you a solution to getting all the apps and updates you need without Google Play.

For those that don’t already know, Huawei has a number of non-smartphone products that are also sold in Canada - including the newly launched HUAWEI Watch GT2 Pro, HUAWEI Freebuds Pro, HUAWEI AX3 Router, and HUAWEI Watch Fit. In advance of Black Friday Sales, I wanted to give you some insight into some of their offers for those eager to shop and get some of the latest and greatest new tech from 2020 .
