Kaya Malay Bistro

As a nostalgic foodie (meaning I am very attached to the foods I ate when I was little), I am forever searching for good Singaporean/Malaysian restaurant. Being in a Western country, this journey is a difficult one. I've been blessed by the multiculturalism of Vancouver though, where I can easily find a handful of options for any foreign cuisine.

Kaya Malay Bistro is not a bad choice at all when you are craving for some authentic Malaysian food. Their interior is dimmed but comfortable, and is usually pretty quiet. I would say it's not a bad place for a date, as this location is not always crowded with customers and noises. It's also an ideal spot to dine and chat for a long time.

I especially love their Roti, it's soft, creamy, and sweet with a mild curry sauce for dipping. When I was younger I used to live close to this very famous Roti Prata in Singapore. We would get 50 sheets of roti all at once and the owner of the shop would wrapped them in newspapers for us to take home. I couldn't take spicy food at all when I was little, so I dipped those roti in sugar. I have hence grown accustomed to that habit, so even now, I'd asked if the restaurant could offer me some sugar to go with the roti.

Kaya's Tofu Goreng is another must order item. It is super delicious with a light sweet and sour sauce, and other toppings to go on top. I like their Tofu Goreng the most among other similar restaurants.

Sweet and Sour Pork is not an exclusive Malaysian/Singaporean dish, but I think it is safe to say it is a traditional dish for all South East Asian countries . Kaya's Sweet & Sour Pork is one of my regular orders there too. It is definitely worth a try !

Never forget your vegetable intake regardless where you eat ! We always make sure we do order some veggie plates wherever we go to balance the meal. This Mixed Curried Vegetables is not a bad addition. A little too heavy for my liking, but it's curry, I shall not complain :)
